2025 Gardening Trends to Watch For

Listen in to this short conversation highlighting 4 gardening trends for 2025.

Sharon has participated in weekly radio chats for over 10 years to share simple and practical gardening tips with her zone 3-4 listening audience of central Alberta; however, the garden practices and information she shares are applicable to gardens of all climates.

It’s always interesting to hear how gardening trends move from year to year. Instead of making great changes, gardening practices refine slightly.

Join this conversation with Sharon hosted by Jackie Rae of 840 CFCW AM as they informally chat about how gardening has morphed in 2025.

Introduction

Let’s dig into gardening trends!

Jackie Rae:

Gardening with Sharon. Yes. It’s Wednesday, and we’re going to talk with Sharon about Gardening Trends for this year. But we do thank our sponsor, Proven Winners, the Brand Gardeners Trust. Good morning, Sharon.

Sharon:

Good morning. Yeah. I wanted to talk about a few trends. There’s a lot, but I just wanted to highlight four today.

Gardening Trend 1:  Sustainable Gardening Practices

Number 1: Eco-friendly, Sustainable Gardening practices are one of the things that are really starting to hit the gardening world.

That looks like rainwater harvesting, composting, soil regeneration practices, reducing waste, lawn reduction with natural water imbibing landscaping, as well as organic pest control methods. Gardeners may choose sustainability through actual plant choice as well, such as drought tolerant and native plants.

Gardening Trend 2: Food Gardening in New Ways

The second trend, I’m going to say, is Food Gardening and Edible Landscaping, and people will say, well, there’s nothing new about that.

But the new twist is sort of like mini gardening. People who usually haven’t been able to do a lot of food gardening are now able to do it on their balconies and patios, and vertical wall gardening is another new spin on that.

Gardening Trend 3: Gardening for Wellness

The third 2025 gardening trend is Gardening for Wellness.

The recognition of the mental health benefits of gardening are starting to come to the forefront, and I would say at last!

People are crafting gardens as spaces of retreat, healing, and relaxation.

And another thing is people also are designing their gardens to be places of gathering, places of community and connecting.

Gardening Trend 4: The Use of Technology in Gardening

The 4th trend is Smart Techie Gardening.

Technology has come to the home gardening world, and it has been around and kind of just been ticking along, but the thing is that it’s really starting to become popular, especially in the area of irrigation and lighting apps to save time and resources.

So that’s the 4 I promised, but there’s more on my social media posts on Facebook and Instagram.

Jackie Rae:

Alright. Looking forward to 2025. Where can we find you, Sharon?

Sharon:

You can find me under Garden with Sharon. That’s the name of my website, my Facebook, and my Instagram pages.

There’s More!

Thanks for listening in up to this point; below are two more 2025 Gardening Trends.

Gardening Trend 5: Pollinator Gardening

The Pollinator piece of the gardening puzzle is another way of improving garden sustainability. Supporting our pollinator communities promotes biodiversity and healthy ecosystems.

Attract bees, butterflies, and other helpful pollinators by planting a diverse range of flowering annuals and perennials.

My blog, 5+ Ways to Create A Thriving and Pollinator-Safe Garden, will guide you through how to craft the best pollinator-attracting gardening space.

Gardening Trend 6: Container Gardening

Container Gardening continues to gain traction as more people find discover the JoY of gardening.

Container gardening is a practice that is limitless and accessible to everyone as potted plants can be grown in indoors or out, and in sunny or shady spaces.

Container gardening is perfect for limited spaces, like balconies and patios; and can be used as living accents in larger gardens to add colour, height, and texture.
